Abstract:

Drawing upon the 2002-2013 Panel Data at the province-level in China and considering the influence of R&D input and FDI inflows, this paper uses nonlinear panel threshold regression to introduce the nonlinear threshold nature of intellectual property protection into the model and explores the mechanism between regional R&D input and FDI inflows and the domestic innovation capability. The research shows that the impact of regional R&D input on innovation capability is not limited to simple linear relationship or U-shaped and inverted U-shaped framework, but also have the complex nonlinear feature of the three thresholds of intellectual property protection;Secondly, the impact of regional FDI inflows on innovation capability is still limited by the regional intellectual property protection:as the intensity of intellectual property protection increases, the impact of FDI inflows on the innovation ability gradually weakens, reflecting a typical threshold effect. On the whole, the threshold effect of regional heterogeneity is obvious,so efforts should be made to enhance the IPR protection in the R&D-intensive areas and suppress the IPR protection in the areas targeted by FDIs.
