Abstract: To find out the mechanism of how media coverage influences high-polluting enterprises' green technology innovation, this paper establishes a theoretical model of the relationship among media coverage, government environmental regulations, public participation and enterprises' green technology innovation, and uses the data of high-polluting listed enterprises from 2012 to 2019 to conduct an empirical research. The results indicate that media coverage measured by reports on environmental pollution plays a significant part in promoting green technological innovation of enterprises. The government environmental regulations play an intermediary role between media coverage and corporate green technological innovation. Specifically, market-incentive instruments play a partial intermediary role between media coverage and enterprises' green technological innovation; command-control instruments play a complete intermediary role. Media coverage will also promote enterprises' green technological innovation by influencing public participation. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the environmental governance function of media coverage, give play to the role of media supervision and reputation mechanisms, and establish an environmental governance system featuring multiple co-governance by the government, enterprises, the public and media, so as to jointly promote the green technology innovation of high-polluting and related enterprises.
