Abstract: Previous studies have focused on the role of mediation variables in the relationship between innovation and TQM, but the connotation and interrelationships among them are still very vague. Taking 24 Chinese multinational corporations as our sample, this paper employs the mediating role of organizational cultural intelligence to explore the relationships between innovation and TQM. We obtain the following research findings:(i) Total quality management has a significant, inverted U-shaped relationship with incremental innovation; i.e., total quality management has an optimal point, and incremental innovation exhibits an increasing and then decreasing trend. (ii) Total quality management has a significantly positive correlation with organizational cultural intelligence. (iii) Organizational cultural intelligence has significantly positive correlations with incremental and radical innovation respectively. (iv) Organizational cultural intelligence plays a partial mediating role between organizational cultural intelligence and incremental innovation, while total mediating effect is found between total quality management and radical innovation.

Key words: total quality management, organizational cultural intelligence, incremental innovation, radical innovation
